“Mother” is Such a Loaded Word

By Val Boyko • June 6th, 2011

The word “mother” brings up many meanings as well as feelings! Even Wikipedia finds “mother” to be a challenge!

mother definition in a heart“A mother is a woman who has conceived, given birth to, or raised a child in the role of a parent.[1] Because of the complexity and differences of a mother’s social, cultural, and religious definitions and roles, it is challenging to define a mother to suit a universally accepted definition.”

So, when we think of a mother we tend to pull from our own experience and then judge how she is in the role and how she “mothered” us.

The word “mother” is a noun and a verb.

However,  a mother cannot always be mothering. It’s just one role that she has in life.  She is a human being first and has many roles – daughter, sister, woman, friend, wife, employee, neighbor, relative, patient and mother.

Can we really expect her to be only a mother for us and see her through the narrow perspective of how she mothered us?

As adult women we don’t define ourselves only as daughters in this life.  Are we being realistic to only think of the women who gave birth to us in terms of how we see her ability to mother us?

p.s. I wonder why there isn’t a verb to “daughter” ….. If there was, how would you define it?
